Michigan stakes claim as "America's Summer Golf Capital"
With more than 650 courses, Michigan claims to be "America's Summer Golf Capital". Eight resorts in northern Michigan, representing 23 courses, have banded together for a marketing alliance with a website of the same name. In the height of summer, golfers can play until 10 p.m. Fall can be magical as well for the changing of the leaves. Although northern Michigan gets all the attention - thanks to multi-course resorts like Boyne, Bay Harbor, Crystal Mountain, Treetops, Garland, Shanty Creek, Grand Traverse, Arcadia Bluffs, Forest Dunes and more - there are other pockets of golf worth exploring. Metro Detroit is a hub of country clubs and a diverse collection of munis at the county (Lyon Oaks), metropark (Stony Creek, Kensington) and city level (Leslie Park in Ann Arbor). Shepherd's Hollow, Pine Trace and Moose Ridge provide that secluded "up north" feel. Near Grand Rapids, Pilgrim's Run and The Mines, both by architect Mike DeVries, are celebrated for their value. Michigan's midsection features two college towns: East Lansing and Mount Pleasant. Hawk's Hollow, Eagle Eye and the 36-hole Forest Akers complex on Michigan State University's campus are favorites in Spartan country. The Pohlcat and Buck's Run share Mount Pleasant with Central Michigan University.
