THE GOLF IS FINER IN NORTH CAROLINA

The Sandhills, home to Pinehurst Resort, is the most famous golf destination in North Carolina, but don’t sell the rest of the state short. A year-round golf climate and a variety of landscapes make North Carolina’s golf scene quite compelling.

There’s mountain golf spread throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville is one of many locations with a historic Donald Ross course. For those who prefer the coast, the Outer Banks delivers a half dozen quality courses, including the Kilmaric Golf Club, Nags Head Golf Links, the Currituck Club and The Carolina Club. The Research Triangle isn’t just for higher learning and college hoops. There’s fine campus courses at Duke (Duke University Golf Club), North Carolina (UNC Finley) and North Carolina State (Lonnie Poole). Charlotte, the state’s largest city, provides a wealth of options. If you’ve got private club connections, cash in a round at Quail Hollow, home of the 2017 PGA Championship, the 2021 Presidents Cup and annually, the Wells Fargo Championship. Otherwise, Ballantyne is the public’s best choice.

Back to the Sandhills, where should a golfer begin? Pinehurst boasts nine regulation courses, including the new No. 4 by Gil Hanse, plus The Cradle, one of golf’s premier short courses. No. 2 remains the standard bearer. Mid Pines and Pine Needles, both in Southern Pines, are Ross originals fresh off renovations. Don’t forget Talamore, Tobacco Road and Dormie Club. There’s always another more golf to play in North Carolina.
